I have watched this move before. A new technology arrives. A small group of people learn enough of the vocabulary to sound like priests. They build a moat out of terminology and let you stand at the edge feeling like you missed something essential. You didn’t. They just got there first and changed the locks before you arrived.
AI is a conversation. That is the whole thing. If you have spent forty years navigating difficult people, writing emails to bureaucrats, explaining complicated situations to someone who didn’t want to listen, you already have the only skill that actually matters. They renamed it prompting. That is a fancy word for talking clearly under pressure. You have been doing it your entire adult life.
Think of it as an intern who has read every book ever written and has zero common sense. Vague instructions get vague results. Specific instructions get specific results. The twenty-two-year-old who knows the architecture but has never had to fight an insurance company, raise a difficult conversation, or sit with a problem long enough to understand it, is not ahead of you. They know the instrument. They don’t know the music yet.
That gap is yours. It is not closing.
The machine is waiting for instructions. It wants to draft the letter you’ve been putting off. It wants to build the plan you keep sketching on paper. It does not need you to understand how it works. You do not understand electricity either. The lights still come on.
Stop waiting to feel qualified. The qualification was never technical.
